Introduction
Sri Shakteeswara Swamy Temple is a distinctive Shaiva pilgrimage centre located at Yanamadurru near Bhimavaram in the West Godavari region of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is situated in Yanamadurru village in Bhimavaram Mandal of West Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh. Yanamadurru is approximately 5–7 km from Bhimavaram, making the shrine easily accessible for pilgrims visiting the important temples of the Bhimavaram region.
The temple stands beside a sacred water body traditionally known as Shakti Gundam. The pond forms an important part of the spiritual landscape of the shrine, and devotees traditionally visit the water body before entering the temple.
Presiding Deity
The principal deity is Sri Shakteeswara Swamy, Lord Shiva in an extraordinary Shirasasana posture. The deity is represented with the feet directed upward and the head towards the ground, symbolizing an intense yogic state.
Goddess Parvati is depicted seated beside Lord Shiva, holding their infant son Sri Subramanyeswara Swamy. The three divine figures are represented together on a single sacred stone platform, making the iconography of the shrine particularly unusual.

Legend of Yama Dharma Raja
According to the traditional Sthala Purana, a powerful demon named Shambura began disturbing sages and obstructing their religious practices. The sages approached Yama Dharma Raja and requested his protection.
Yama fought Shambura but was unable to defeat the demon despite repeated efforts. Seeking divine strength, Yama undertook severe penance to Lord Shiva. Shiva was absorbed in deep yogic meditation and did not initially respond to Yama's prayers.
Goddess Parvati, pleased by Yama's devotion and perseverance, granted him the strength required to overcome Shambura. Empowered by her grace, Yama defeated the demon and restored peace to the region.
Yama subsequently prayed to Lord Shiva to remain in the area and protect it from further disturbances by evil forces. According to the temple tradition, Shiva then manifested together with Goddess Parvati and infant Subramanya in the distinctive Shirasasana posture.
Origin of the Name Yanamadurru
The traditional history associates the ancient name of the settlement with Yama Dharma Raja. It is said to have been known as Yamapuri and subsequently Yamunapuram before gradually becoming Yanamadurru.
This association with Yama is an important element of the temple's traditional identity. The shrine's legend presents Yama not merely as the deity associated with death, but also as a protector who received divine strength through his devotion to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Shakti Gundam
